A console table can provide the perfect statement in any room. The long empty space is an opportunity to create a wonderful vignette: adding texture, pictures, art, lamps and books that are personal to your family. Often they are seen in the entry way of a home but are also found behind a sofa, in a dining room, in a living room. I love entry way console tables because they provide a practical space to place mail, keys and other important grab and go items. But, in our apartment, we unfortunately don’t have the luxury of a large entry way so our console table is in our dining room. Apartment living often means awkward spaces and sizes so I wanted to do a quick round up of some of my favorite console tables that are more versatile for apartment living and how to style them to add a beautiful layer to your home.

The Table

Styling Elements

Ground the Bottom

If the table you are working with has an open bottom or a bottom shelf, this is where you can add grounding elements. Baskets are a classic go-to but a stack of white blankets, large ceramics, or books can also be wonderful, especially if you are styling the console table in a living room.

Elevate the Top

Placing a larger piece of art, a mirror or lamps helps create a focal point and balance the look. I used a lamp on ours since I had to put it in front of the window which didn’t make it very conducive for a large mirror or art piece.

Add in Impactful Styling Pieces

Next, we want to layer in more significant styling pieces: lamps, large vases, chunky books and smaller art pieces. Check out my shop page for different book options. Start with the larger pieces as it helps reduce a cluttered look. As I add the pieces in, I always step back and look how the vignette is blending and scaling together. Trust your gut-if something feels off, adjust!

Add in Finishing Touches

Now it’s time to add in some finishing touches. I love to incorporate candles, florals and greenery, trays, small dishes and boxes to hold keys.
